2003 Engineer of the Year
Robert M. Rodgers, P.E., P.T.O.E.

Robert M. Rodgers, President of Orth-Rodgers and Associates, Inc., has over 33 year of experience as a professional in the field of transportation engineering and planning in the Delaware Valley. Bob was born and raised in Houston, Texas and has called the Delaware Valley his home since 1963. He received his Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from Villanova University in 1969. He returned to Villanova to obtain a Masters degree in Civil Engineering, with a specialty in Transportation, in 1971. He is a registered Professional Engineer in six states and a certified Professional Traffic Operation Engineer (P.T.O.E).

Bob directs the operations of Orth-Rodgers, a Philadelphia-based consulting engineering firm which he co-founded. In addition to its Philadelphia headquarters, the firm has six branch offices in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida and Nevada, with over 130 employees in a variety of transportation disciplines. Amoung the firm's specialties are traffic engineering, transportation planning, transportation systems simulation and modeling, highway design, bridge design, community and regional planning, environmental science and planning, landscape architecture and urban design, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) efforts.

Bob has worked to develop and implement programs aimed at the enhancement of the technological literacy of the public. These efforts include work with students, teachers, and guidance counselors, specifically to target students who may be considering the challenges and career opportunities in the engineering profession. He has assisted engineering students from area colleges through employment opportunities for both cooperative intern education programs and summer assignments. He has been instrumental in continued efforts to provide information to the general public on the way engineering and technology can affect and enrich the quality of their lives.

Bob's service to his profession includes intense activity in the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), both in the Mid-Atlantic Section (MASITE) and at the National level. He has served in several capacities in MASITE, culminating as President in 1984. He also represented ITE's District 2 in various positions, including District President (1991). In 2000, he was elected ITE's International President. He chaired the 2002 ITE Annual Meeting and Exhibit, conducted in Philadelphia, and he was instrumental in the selection of our city for the Meeting (the first time it has been held here since 1968). He is also an active member of the American Society of Highway Engineers, the Urban Land Institute, and the American Public Works Association.

In 1997, after 35 years of residence in Drexel Hill, Bob and his wife Michele moved to their current home in Center City. The have two daughters and a son, who are, as Bob describes, "all out of college, out of the house, and out making their ways in the world". Bob and Michele are the proud grandparents of Taylor, Dalton and Bridget.
