2005 Young Engineer of the Year
The quality of this year's YEOY
candidates was excellent and resulted in a dual selection of the 2005
Young Engineer of the Year and one honorable mention. James P. Markham,
P.E., Pennoni Associates Inc. and Thomas W. Brady, P.E., Vollmer
Associates share the prestigious Young Engineer of the Year award and
Brian R. Lipko, P.E., Joseph B. Callaghan, Inc., received the Honorable
Mention award.
Young Engineers of the Year
James P. Markham, P.E.

James Paul Markham II
manages the Highway group in the Philadelphia Transportation Technology
at Pennoni Associates Inc. He is the primary Project Engineer and
primary point of contact for Bensalem Township, and as such is
responsible for coordination of the efforts of four separate offices.
James manages the reviews for the PENNDOT District 6-0 Highway
Occupancy Permit review contract, as well as functioning as the
Township Traffic Engineer in Lower Southampton. He has served as Lead
Engineer for several projects for private developers and municipal
clients.
James was born in Warren, PA and is currently a
resident of the Queen Village neighborhood of Philadelphia. He earned a
B.S.E in Civil Engineering from University of Pennsylvania, and is a
Licensed Professional Engineer in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He
is generous in donating his time to his Alma Mater, participating in
the University of Pennsylvania Transportation Systems Engineering
Alumni Club (TSEAC) and serving on the University of Pennsylvania ABET
Outside Advisory Board.
James had been an active member of the American Society
of Civil Engineers since 1996, and a Younger Member Forum Board Member
since 2001. He served that organization as the Chairman of College
Contacts from 2001 to 2002, the Assistant Secretary from 2002 to 2003,
the Secretary from 2003 to 2004, and as the Newsletter Editor 2004 to
the present. James has also been active in the American Society of
Highway Engineers since 2001.
As an active member of his community, James
participates in the Queen Village Neighbors Association as well as
several other charitable works including Toys for Tots, Friends of
Wissahickon, Philabundance, and the American Red Cross.
Thomas W. Brady, P.E.
Thomas W. Brady, P.E., is a
Senior Highway Project Manager at Vollmer Associates LLP, Kennett
Square office. His current projects include 38th Street and Woodland
Avenue roadway realignment and a three-bridge replacement in Bucks
County, PA. He has served as project engineer on the US 202 Section 400
project and the Germantown Avenue over Wissahickon Creek Bridge
Replacement project.
Mr. Brady was born in Roxborough, section of
Philadelphia, PA and currently resides in Exton, PA. He received a
Bachelor of Science., Civil Engineering from Drexel University and a
Master of Science, Civil Engineering from Villanova University. He is a
registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania, Delaware and
Maryland.
As a member of the ASCE, he has served as Membership
Secretary, and on the Younger Member Forum he has been Chairperson for
College Contacts, Chairperson for Technical Groups and Treasurer.
Additional organizations that he is actively involved are the Engineers' Club of Philadelphia, the American Society of Highway Engineers and the
Order of the Engineer.
Mr. Brady has been active in non-engineering
organizations including Calvary Fellowship Church and Bethlehem United
Methodist Church serving in various leadership roles involving
activities our youth.
Honorable Mention
Brian R. Lipko, P.E.
Brian Richard Lipko is a Licensed Engineer
who has been a member of ASCE for 8+ years and is currently the
President of the South Jersey Branch. He has also served the South
Jersey Branch as President Elect, Vice- President and Younger Member
President.
Mr. Lipko , originally from Audubon, NJ, and currently
resides in Cherry Hill, NJ. From his early exposure to engineering from
his father, who is also in the engineering industry, he knew that
engineering would be his career choice. After graduating from Audubon
High School, he attended Camden County Community College where he
obtained an A.S. in engineering and completed his engineering education
at Drexel University with a Bachelor of Science, Civil Engineering,
specializing in Structural Engineering.
Mr. Lipko's experience has spanned both small and large
companies where he had the opportunity to work on a plethora of small
and large projects in this area and around the world.
In addition to his extensive involvement in ASCE, Mr.
Lipko is a member of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE and a
member of the Delaware Valley Association of Structural Engineers.
Volunteer activities include assisting Rowan University in obtaining
judges for the annual concrete canoe and steel bridge competition for
the past four years; taught a class on "Sports Science - The Physics
Behind Skiing, Biking and Skating" at the Stockton Grade School in
Cherry Hill, NJ; chaired various Engineers Week activities while
working at Flour Daniel's Marlton, NJ office for three years; performed
bicycle and in-line skate safety demonstrations at many schools and
health fairs over the past 10+ years.
Mr. Lipke's publications include 1996, "FRP for
Transformer Room", FRP International Journal from ACI, Volume IV, Issue
4 and various articles in the ASCE South Jersey Branch newsletter. Has
been recognized for his talent in carpentry cabinet making by receiving
Best of Show, 2 years in a row, at the South Jersey Craftsman Fair for
an oak desk and an oak bed.
He has published several articles in the ASCE South
Jersey Branch newsletter and published, "FRP for Transformer Room",
FRP International Journal from ACI, Volume IV, Issue 4.
