2016 EOY: Kevin L. Johnson, PE

KJohnson Headshot-webDuring his 32-year career, Mr. Kevin Johnson, PE, has become a recognized leader in the transportation engineering industry. As President of a prominent transportation engineering firm in the Mid-Atlantic region and a member of numerous boards and committees across the state and region, Mr. Johnson is one of the faces of transportation in not only the Greater Philadelphia Region, but across Pennsylvania. His firm has worked on countless transportation engineering projects across the region which have contributed to the safety and efficiency of lives across the Delaware Valley. Mr. Johnson is a resident of Tredyffrin Township, has four children and two rescue dogs.

Current Professional Responsibilities

Mr. Johnson is co-founder and President of Traffic Planning and Design, Inc. (TPD), an engineering firm founded in 1989 and headquartered in Pottstown, PA. Beginning with six employees in a converted farmhouse, the company has grown to over 110 employees located in eight offices. In his capacity as President, Mr. Johnson oversees the overall operations and business development of the firm. Throughout his career, Mr. Johnson has been responsible for the design of over 400 transportation oriented projects and has also prepared and managed nearly 2,000 traffic impact and parking studies nationwide for a variety of clients.  He currently serves as a defense expert witness for cases involving highway accidents and fatalities in the region.

Society Memberships and Officers

Mr. Johnson is only the second Engineer to serve on the Board of Directors (BOD) for the SEPTA. He is Chairman of both the Audit and Pension Committees and is past Chairman of both the Administrative and Operations Committees. He is also a Board member for the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors (APC). As a member of the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) Delaware Valley Chapter, he served on the BOD and as Vice President and President. He also was a BOD member for the Chester County Planning Commission for several years, as well as a member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers and the Transportation Committee for ACEC/PA.

Professional Career Data

In these roles, Mr. Johnson worked tirelessly for the passage of Act 89 to provide an enhanced dedicated funding stream for transportation projects. In these advocacy roles, he testified before the House Transportation Commission, spoke at numerous press conferences, television and radio programs, met with dozens of elected state officials and worked with journalists to win public support for the changes to financing transportation improvements in Pennsylvania. These efforts continue today, with education of the public and elected officials on the pressure to divert funding intended for transportation purposes to other agencies in the Commonwealth.

TPD is a member of the Philadelphia Business Journal’s Hot Firm Hall of Fame for being ranked as one of the 100 fastest growing businesses in the Greater Philadelphia region for five years in succession. TPD is also one of the 20 largest engineering firms in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Under Mr. Johnson’s leadership, TPD is an active supporter of our Military Veterans including compensating them for the difference between their military pay and their normal TPD pay during deployments and trainings. TPD is also regularly ranked by the Philadelphia Business Journal as one of the most philanthropic companies in the Delaware Valley. In addition, TPD has been awarded Platinum status by the Greater Valley Forge TMA for their sustainability efforts.

Mr. Johnson has been instrumental in the planning and design of several award-winning projects. In addition to his work on the Schuylkill Expressway Reconstruction project, Mr. Johnson was instrumental in developing the concepts for the first roundabout in Pennsylvania on a numbered state highway as the Traffic Engineer for East Marlborough Township. As the Township Traffic Engineer for West Whiteland Township, he developed the concepts for addressing traffic safety and congestion concerns at the formerly offset intersection of Ship Road with Swedesford Road. Mr. Johnson also developed the concepts for the Route 422 Interchange and Roadway improvement projects addressing traffic congestion in Exeter Township. He has also developed the concepts for addressing safety and congestion issues in Collegeville Borough at the offset intersection with Route 29. The municipalities for all of these projects were the recipients of the annual Road and Bridge Safety Improvement Award given by the Pennsylvania Highway Information Association.

Papers Published and Patents

As an accepted expert in his field, Mr. Johnson’s career is deeply rooted in the industry. He has been featured on local television and radio programs on various transportation topics. He has made presentations before several sections of ASHE on various projects, at the annual conference of the Pennsylvania Association of Environmental Planning on multiple occasions, and at the annual meeting of the Philadelphia chapter of the American Public Works Association. Mr. Johnson has co-authored articles in the ITE Journal and ASHE Scanner.

Civic Organizations and Offices

Besides supporting all employees who join professional organizations, Mr. Johnson actively encourages TPD employees to serve on the Boards of these Professional, Civic and Local Government organizations. Mr. Johnson also continuously makes strides to play an integral role in transportation education and awareness. In 2011, he was one of four engineers to serve on former Governor Corbett’s Transportation Funding Advisory Commission and is the only engineer to serve on the Transportation Transition teams for both former Governor Corbett and Governor Tom Wolf.
