2013 Outstanding Service Award: Michael P. Venuto, PE, PLS

Michael P. Venuto, PE, PLSMichael Venuto, PE, PLS has been a dedicated public service employee at the DRPA for 12 years, starting as a Senior Engineer in December 2000, rising to Manager of Port Projects in July 2005, followed by Manager of Planning and Design in April 2006, Acting Director of the Port of Philadelphia and Camden in September 2008, and has served as Chief Engineer/Director of Engineering since February 2010.  As Chief Engineer, Michael oversees the approximately $1 Billion 5-year capital program ensuring that DRPA/PATCO’s assets are kept safe, secure and serviceable for the traveling public.  These assets include the Betsy Ross Bridge, Benjamin Franklin Bridge, Walt Whitman Bridge, Commodore Barry Bridge, and PATCO.

During his ongoing tenure at the DRPA, Michael has initiated an Asset Management Plan for the Authority’s major assets to enhance the Capital Planning process.  He was also the Design Manager for the $140 million Walt Whitman Redecking Project.  While Acting Director of the Port of Philadelphia and Camden he managed operational, administrative, sales and marketing, safety, and budgetary functions for the Cruise Terminal and Riverlink Ferry System.

Mr. Venuto started his career as a Construction Engineer at Air Products & Chemicals, Inc. in August 1993 followed by Project Engineer in May 1996.  He then served as Division Manager – Mechanical Construction at A.C. Schultes from June 1999 to November 2000.

Michael holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Rutgers University, a MBA from Lehigh University and a B.S. in Surveying Engineering Technology from New Jersey Institute of Technology.  Mr. Venuto is a licensed Professional Engineer and licensed Professional Land Surveyor in the State of New Jersey.  He is also a member of the New Jersey Society of Professional Land Surveyors, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Engineers’ Club of Philadelphia.

In addition to being a dedicated professional, Michael spends considerable time serving his community.  For the past 12 years, he has participated in various school Career Days, inspiring youth to consider study and careers in Engineering and teaching leadership skills.  He has dedicated his time for the last 8 years as a volunteer for youth sports, setting an example for good sportsmanship and skill development.  Michael is also a Junior Achievement Volunteer in his hometown of Washington Township, NJ.

Mr. Venuto regularly makes technical presentations to ASCE, ASME and ACEC, imparting his knowledge of the DRPA organization and cutting edge initiatives in the field.  Michael has also played a key role in the Lean Government/Sig Sigma efforts at the DRPA/PATCO serving as a volunteer leader with responsibilities including leading effective team building exercises.  The information and ideas he has provided in the Lean Government sessions to over 100 participating staff members has been instrumental in the successful implementation of numerous operational efficiencies at the DRPA/PATCO.
